One of the largest cultural centers in Russia,in which a large number of different institutions are concentrated, is the city of Chelyabinsk. The museum of local lore of this region is a unique treasury of spiritual heritage. To date, it is one of the oldest institutions in the region to store and collect a variety of art, history and scientific collections. The funds that Chelyabinsk Regional Museum possesses are more than two hundred and seventy thousand units, among which there are items having a special all-Russian significance.

The first stage in the history of the museum

The history of this institution begins in 1913year, when a small group of enthusiasts, led by a famous Soviet geographer and botanist Ippolit Mikhailovich Krasheninnikov, began collecting the collection. The painstaking work of these people allowed the fall of 1922 to collect a fairly large number of a wide variety of materials. At the same time, the Presidium of the Provincial Executive Committee formally provided for them the accommodation of a residential building along Truda Street (Chelyabinsk). The Museum of Local Lore opened its doors solemnly for visitors and residents of the city in July 1923. The first director was the geologist and teacher Ivan Gavrilovich Gorokhov, who later dedicated this institution to more than forty years of his life.

Second phase

From 1929 to 1933 the Chelyabinsk Regional StudiesThe museum repeatedly changed the address and moved to different rooms. A more or less permanent place for his registration was the building of the former Holy Trinity Church. It was located at the following address: Kirov Street, house 60-a (Chelyabinsk city). The Museum of Local Lore was here from 1933 to 1989. Later, all the expositions were located on the first floor of the building, located on Lenin Avenue. As for the museum funds, they were at that time in special rooms along Kaslińska Street.

In 1941, this cultural institution wasclosed, and his building was transferred to the full jurisdiction of the NKVD. Practically until the end of the war, families of employees of the People's Commissariat lived here and evacuated archives were located.

Museum today

In June 2006, the official opening ceremony took placenew building at the address: Truda street, house 100 (Chelyabinsk). The Museum of Local Lore received modern exhibition and storage conditions that meet all the highest requirements of the leading Russian museums. Its technical equipment is represented by a system of highly functional multimedia equipment and meets the highest standards. As for the management of the museum, from the year two thousand four, its director is Vladimir Ivanovich Bogdanovsky.

The main expositions of the museum

Currently, permanent exhibitions,open to viewers, are "History and Folk Life", "Nature and Ancient History" and "History of the Twentieth Century." In the first hall visitors are introduced to the lives of people who inhabited the territory of the South Urals, beginning with the Iron Age. The second exposition presents various samples of minerals and rocks, botanical and zoological collections, a large number of paleontological specimens, archaeological materials from the Bronze Age and the Stone Age.

And, finally, in the third hall, visitors are introduced tohistory of the region. It tells about the construction of the railway in the South Urals, the most significant and interesting events, as well as socio-political changes in the eighties and nineties of the twentieth century. In addition, in this room everyone is introduced to the history of photography.
