We built this divine abode by joint efforts. The second name is the St. Catherine's Cathedral. The choice of the patroness is associated with the fact that it was during Catherine II that the Crimea became part of the Russian state. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Sarygol village was on this site. In it lived the workers serving the railway station "Feodosia". St. Catherine's Church, whose address is Fedko Street, 95, was built in 1892 precisely for them. It is noteworthy that the foundation of the church was laid on the birthday of the Russian Empress.

History

Synod for construction was allocated only threethousand rubles. Most of the money was made by private donors. Do not stay aside and the usual residents of the city, among whom also held fundraising. Quite a few helped local merchants, buying building materials, as well as some workers who on Sundays free of charge built the church of St. Catherine. Feodosia, at that time a small town, already had several small temples, but to this the locals were particularly anxious.

The work was managed by a committee headed bydirector of the local male gymnasium. The Church of St. Catherine (Theodosius) functioned until 1937, and then for obvious reasons it was temporarily closed by the Soviet authorities. Divine services were renewed during the occupation of the city by the Germans, but after liberation it was no longer closed.

Description

At the heart of the temple plan is an equal cross. The entrance to the church is located on the west side. It is decorated with a portico above which a relatively small belfry rises. Its decoration is a low colonnade, assembled from the expanded in the middle of the columns.

The walls of the church stand on a plinth of impressive height. Columns are installed in all corners. There is no single dome over the church. In this church it was replaced by five small onions, which is also typical for many religious objects of Russia.

Some priests who served in the walls of the church,history did not go unnoticed. For example, the former abbot of the monastery A. Kosovski is listed as a saint. Andrei Theodosius was shot by the Bolsheviks for allegedly anti-Soviet activities. In her memoirs, Tsvetaeva mentions another minister from the St. Catherine's Church, Father Makariya. She became close to him during her stay in Feodosia. Archpriest Alexei is credited with initiating the restoration of the church. It was during the years of his ministry that new works were started, thanks to which the church today is turned into a huge complex.
